Tracking the AP JPEG – Introduction

My trusted side kick and fellow contributor, Kevin Vicklund has shared with me his DCSA103 JPEG. The image is 300 ppi versus 200 ppi for the ABC PDF document and 120 ppi for the Muscatine Journal PDF. Hermitian had claimed that Applewhite was the ‘author’ of these PDF’s because his name showed up as the ‘author’ but as I will show, this happens automatically as part of a simple workflow. While our friend is still struggling, I have, in the spirit of scientific inquiry, looked at the actual data.

AP110427018673.jpg was obtained by our friend Kevin from APImages and holds various surprises: First of all the JPEG is not subsampled and secondly, the resolution is 300ppi. As shown elsewhere, the image was created at 8:53AM on April 27, 2011, soon after the press conference had started.

Create a new PDF in Acrobat using the AP jpeg and save as PDF. Title, author, and subject are all cleared, PDF Producer: Adobe Acrobat 11.0 Image Conversion Plug-in, Content Creator: Adobe Acrobat 11.0

Now extract JPEG from PDF. Note that there are still some inconsistencies… 300 PPI versus 200 ppi, the component compression is still 4:4:4, but that is just a simple step. What seems self evident is that the appearance of the Author tags is no evidence that Applewhite actually created the PDFs.

    You sure are wasting a lot of time on a dead end NBC. Serves you right for switching your starting JPEG image. Maybe you already know this (and maybe you don’t).

    The page dimensions of the AP PDF file “ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” image are:

    W = 2698 P / 200 PPI = 13.49 in. ; H = 3234 P / 200 PPI = 16.17 in.

    The page dimensions of your “AP110427018673.jpg” AP Images “AP JPEG” are:

    W = 2698 P / 300 PPI = 8.993333 in. ; H = 3234 P / 300 PPI = 10.78 in.

    Scaling the “AP110427018673.jpg” up to the “ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” would yield a pixel resolution of:

    200 PPI = (8.993333 in. / 13.49 in.) x 300 PPI
    or
    200 PPI = (10.78 in. / 16.17) x 300 PPI

    Thus the “AP110427018673.jpg” must be scaled up by a factor of 1.5.

    Now this is not possible to accomplish with Adobe Acrobat CC. When your new smaller “AP JPEG” is opened in Acrobat XI, the file is automatically scanned and converted to an Acrobat PDF. However this PDF image is not editable in Acrobat XI. Attempts to apply the new Text/Image Editing tools of Acrobat XI fail because the Image Edit Tool indicates zero items on the page are editable. I don’t have Acrobat 8.26 but I’m pretty sure that it is not possible to edit this image with version 8.26 either. The earlier versions of Acrobat do not have the Edit Text & Images Tools.

    The attempt to edit the PDF image results in a warning and the recommendation to apply the “Export File To..” Tool to convert the file to some other non-Adobe format for resizing. These external file formats include Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format, Microsoft Excel Workbook, XML Spreadsheet, and Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation. The only other option is to apply the selection tool to the page then right click on the page and select Edit Using/ Adobe Photoshop. This action attempts to load the converted Adobe PDF file into Photoshop. I attempted this using your Obama_Birth.jpg file and the Adobe converted Obama_Birth.pdf failed to load.This is probably another case of incompatibility of Adobe PDF file in Photoshop CC. Photoshop CC prefers Photoshop PDF instead of Adobe PDF.

    The only workaround if you insist on starting with the smaller image “AP110427018673.jpg” is to first open the JPEG in Photoshop, scale up the image to the larger size of the AP ABC News PDF image, and then re-save the scaled image as a JPEG. Then load the scaled JPEG into Adobe Acrobat XI and then save the auto-converted PDF. However you won’t like the results. I have the results of this workflow starting with Obama_Birth.jpg.

    So the bottom line is your workflow doesn’t work. So you have no choice but to back up and use the other larger AP11042717913.pdf image to create the AP NBC News PDF.

    Starting with this larger JPEG image one only has to open the JPEG in Adobe Acrobat CC and then save the auto-converted PDF.

    It’s really not complicated when you know how to use the high-level Adobe PDF Tools.

    I take your references to Acrobat “CC”, Photoshop “CC” etc. to mean you’ve subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud. How progressive of you! I hope you’re enjoying the software and learning a lot.

    One thing is clear is that Obots don’t like facts especially if they are stated in units of inches. JPOT is so dumb that he doesn’t even know that he is comparing apples and oranges. Obviously, he doesn’t have a clue about the significance of my lengthy and weighty post of yesterday.

    Hermitian is guaranteed to be at least a few steps behind the facts…

    His ABC/Muscatine PDF claims have been shown to be without any merit.

    Hermitian’s continued presence with us has allowed us to rebut many unsupported claims and resolve many minor mysteries.

    Remember how simple experiments could have resolved many of his claims, and with a little more effort they could have been totally rejected. Instead, he went down a path of unsupported accusations that lacked in logic and reason, and as I now have shown, also in supporting data.

    This is how you do research my friend… Sometimes you go down a dead end track and back up, but almost invariably the hard work is rewarded by new insights.

    I doubt that Hermitian is willing to admit how at least three major claims by him have been laid to rest. It started with the MS case where Kevin showed how a simple workflow creates exactly the effects our friend sees as evidence of nefarious activity. Not that he ever explained the relevance of his claims.
    Then there were the claims about the ABC News PDF and the Muscatine Jounral PDF, claims which on closer scrutiny failed to stand up.

    And then there has been his countless efforts to show that the Xerox workflow was wrong.

    He is quite entertaining but I am not sure if he has ever accepted to being wrong.

    But has failed to catch any real fish… Worse, he has shown how much simpler explanations continue to reject his fanciful beliefs.
    Which is why data should guide hypotheses, not the other way around.

  17. Acrobat 9 can export a PDF comprised as an Image using its Advanced | Document Processing | Export All Images dialog, but I don’t know why you would want to open a JPG file and then save it as a JPG file. Maybe I missed something about what Hermitian was trying to do.

  18. Doc, the task is to import a JPEG, change its resolution (and component compression), and embed it in a pdf. NBC has discovered how to do the second step first using another tool, so it becomes change its resolution (and component compression), import a JPEG, and embed it in a pdf.
