The ABC Long Form Birthcertificate PDF

Let’s compare the JPEG inside the ABC PDF with the AP JPEG made available by the Associated press. Remember the simple workflow: The ABC editor imported the JPEG into Acrobat and saved the PDF. I have extracted the JPEG from the PDF and compared the metadata to the AP JPEG metadata.

MSNBC  TV has the best AP JPEG DCS103 available

The metadata shows that John Makely, Sr. Multimedia Editor and Producer at NBC News Digital touched the file around 6:30AM

  1. I note that the Urgency metadata in the ABC embedded JPEG isn’t properly formatted, thus the “Unknown”. It should be a single byte, but when I looked at in the other thread, it was encoded as two bytes, with the second byte being a space. So instead of “5”, it is “5 “.

  2. What is the YCbCr sub sampling of your image? 4:4:4 or 4:2:0? Or could you send me the 103 file and I can check🙂

  3. What is the YCbCr sub sampling of your image? 4:4:4 or 4:2:0? Or could you send me the 103 file and I can check

Heh. It’s 4:4:4. With a resolution of, get this, 300 PPI at 2698×3234 pixels. Which means:

    1) The ABC pdf had the resolution changed to 200 PPI and the chroma channels subsampled
    2) The Muscatine Journal pdf had the image cropped and then resampled to 120 PPI while maintaining the page size. So I did correctly remember that it was a simple crop operation, I just hadn’t looked at the resolution of the original when I did the comparison a month ago.

I could have sworn I looked at the resolution of the AP JPEG at some point, though. Huh.

  4. Oh, I think I know what happened. In 010 Hex Editor, on the left is a list of open files. I’m used to being able to click on lists like this to shift the focus to that file, but in 010, you have to actually select the tab. I think I went from looking at the 103A to the 103, which have almost identical metadata, and didn’t realize at the time that I hadn’t actually switched.

  5. BTW, I don’t think I’ve ever described the structure of the AP JPEG.

    SOI (start of file)
    APP0 (JFIF formatting)
APP1 (Exif metadata, using XMP formatting in this case)
    APP13 (IPTC metadata)
    APP2 (ICC color profile)
    APP14 (Adobe data)
    DQT (quantization tables)
SOF (describes size of image and component sampling)
DRI (defines the restart interval in macroblocks)
    DHT (Huffman tables)
    SOS (start of image data)
    EOI (end of file)

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Yet another diversion from NBC ! He had everyone convinced that his beloved “AP JPEG” was obtained with a bonafide chain of custody from the AP Images web site here:

    http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Obama/400ef843b542462bb458f01b39012402/53/0

But as always he didn’t really mean it. So instead he pulls up two other JPEGs out of the Blue that he has actually been using. Now the most significant thing about his first new link is that it purportedly involves MSNBC.

Now just why MSNBC would have free access to a property of AP Images is just left hanging by NBC. But then NBC doesn’t actually state that this is the same image as the AP JPEG image. Nor does he state that it is one-and-the-same “AP JPEG” that he has been analyzing.

To any rational person (with even half a brain) the involvement of MSNBC should absolutely guarantee that this new image is totally worthless. But never fear NBC has spoken on this and provided his seal of approval —” MSNBC TV has the best AP JPEG DCS103 available”. And naturally, in his unique view of the scientific method, he leaves the reader to guess what “the best” really means when one substitutes the faux for the genuine. Nevertheless, we are instructed to eagerly equate his new replacement image to the genuine image that is for sale on the AP Images web site. Now realizing that a few might not “just move along — nothing to see here” NBC has sweetened the pot by posting another link to an even more obscure source with the encouraging words “Another one here”.

And, best of all, the resolution of NBC’s stealth “AP JPEG” has now magically increased from 200 PPI x 200 PPI to 300 PPI x 300 PPI.

Did NBC’s degrees-of-freedom list just get a lot longer ?

    You betcha !

NBC then posts his usual obscenely long printouts for everyone to digest in their leisure ?

    2. Early this morning I accessed your link to obtain the PDF that you had previously downloaded. I noticed immediately that the file name has been changed from “4dbS2608b486f.pdf” to “4dbS2608b486f.pdf.pdf”. So obviously someone has modified the file since I first downloaded it. So I used a “bulletproof” method of acquiring this file because I wanted to keep it separate from my original file “4dbS2608b486f.pdf”. I Emailed the file “4dbS2608b486f.pdf.pdf” to myself in a Zip file and then saved and unzipped the new file into a new subdirectory. The file properties for your “4dbS2608b486f.pdf.pdf” are:

The METADATA “ModifyDate” of this file was not changed by my “bulletproof” acquisition method.

Your file “4db82608b436f.pdf.pdf “ is larger in size than my file “4db82608b436f.pdf”.

So we are going to have to agree to disagree. I’m certainly not willing to work with a modified file.

    3. I have fully checked my original file, and except for the change in the “ModifyDate” in the file METADATA I find no other changes in the PDF file structure since the moment that it was downloaded.

    4. You still haven’t posted the date and time that you first acquired (downloaded ?) the Muscatine Journal PDF file “4db82608b436f.pdf.pdf “. Obviously it was after I personally downloaded the original Muscatine Journal PDF file “4db82608b436f.pdf “ on June 20, 2013 (directly off the Muscatine Journal web site).

    5. I checked to see if the original file “4db82608b436f.pdf.pdf “ could be downloaded from the Muscatine Journal URL via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. I found that the first snapshot after 04/27/2011 was taken on May 05, 2011 at 18:42:01. I tried to download the PDF from the archived web page but got the following message instead of the download:

    “Element not valid”
“The element requested is either not valid or does not exist.”

    6. I also attempted to retrieve any archival copies of your file “4db82608b436f.pdf.pdf “ but your URL was not archived.

Obviously, someone has taken steps to guarantee that the original file “4db82608b436f.pdf” is no longer available.

  8. Hahah Poor Hermitian, just upset that I am doing research rather than make uninformed assertions about who created what.

That’s what scientists do my friend… They look for data and try to explain the observations through experiment. It now appears that all point to the simple fact that the AP JPEG was used by Muscatine and ABC and others to create their own versions. Some as PDF, most as JPEG.

    SO much for Hermitian’s ‘conspiracies’…

Poor poor Hermitian… He really thought he was on to something here…

  9. So what is the conclusion of all of this? That the original source for the Muscatine and ABC photos was the AP Scott Applewhite photo?

Yes. The metadata seen in the Muscatine Journal and ABC pdfs can be found in the Applewhite photo, except where metadata was obviously replaced by the editing program (such as dates and CreatorTools) or where metadata was shortened (such as dropping the timestamp or the timezone). The sizes and resolutions are explainable by changes made to the original 300 PPI image. I’m not entirely sure what is going on with the embedded PSD in the Muscatine Journal, though. I haven’t deflated it to analyze the code, and need to find a guide to the code if I were to do so.

  10. Obviously, someone has taken steps to guarantee that the original file “4db82608b436f.pdf” is no longer available.

    ROTFL… You’re so hilarious…

  11. Obviously, someone has taken steps to guarantee that the original file “4db82608b436f.pdf” is no longer available.

Sigh… This is hilarious… Does our friend not realize that the Muscatine Journal never hosted the PDF?

A little capability to do the correct research clears up so many ‘fantasies’

I note that this is from the file properties pop-up from Windows Explorer. You need to look at the file metadata.

The METADATA “ModifyDate” of this file was not changed by my “bulletproof” acquisition method.

So you say, but you haven’t posted the METADATA.

You need to change your download method, you are modifying the file each time you download it. My method doesn’t change the ModifyDate, which can be seen by the fact that the files I downloaded on 04/03/13 at 7:32 pm, 06/25/13 at 3:10 pm, 09/05/13 at 5:33 pm, and the two on my other computer (downloaded in early August and again last night) all have identical METADATA, from 20110427, even down to the timestamp.

  13. Hermie, yesterday:

    See: http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/muscatinejournal.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/6/a6/6a633f26-70d9-11e0-8729-001cc4c002e0/4db82608b486f.pdf.pdf

The filename that I downloaded from this link is “4db82608b486f.pdf copy.pdf” not “4db82608b486f.pdf”.

Notice how it’s saving with the copy added to it? That means that Windows is recognizing that a file with the same filename already exists in that folder. The first file Hermie downloaded probably is named “4db82608b486f.pdf.pdf” but has the file extension hidden. In any case, the file has had the .pdf.pdf since May of 2011. Any modifications Hermie is seeing is entirely due to his method of downloading, not some vast conspiracy.

  14. Now remember that Hermitian is perhaps not too familiar with these methods. Patience… Eventually he will get it and move on…

  15. NBC

    TIME OUT !!!

NBC has pulled another fast one! Realizing from my recent post regarding the size differential between the Muscatine Journal PDF image “4db82608b486f.pdf” and the AP ABC NEWS image “ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” NBC has thrown in the towel on the ABC News PDF

“ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” which can be found here:

    http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf

which is the same size as the AP Images here:

    http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Obama/400ef843b542462bb458f01b39012402/53/0

Now WKV has posted that he is using the first link above for his analysis of the AP ABC News image.

Both of these two images are page size W = 13.49 in. ; H = 16.17 in. And pixel resolution of 200 PPI x 200 PPI. The page size of the Muscatine Journal PDF image “4db82608b486f.pdf” is W = 8.695 in. X 10.355 in. This image is also 200 PPI x 200 PPI.

The two new substitute images are first the MSNBC JPEG image at:

and the second substitute JPEG is found at this obscure URL:

The page size of the MSNBC JPEG is W = 37.472 in. ; H = 44.917 in. And the pixel resolution is 72 PPI x 72 PPI.

However, the page size of the second substitute is much smaller. The page dimensions are conveniently much closer to the page dimensions of the Muscatine Journal PDF file “4db82608b486f.pdf”. The page dimensions of this smaller page are W = 8.993 in. ; H = 10.780 in. The pixel resolution of this smaller image is 300 PPI x 300 PPI.

If the page size of the very large MSNBC JPEG image “obama_birthcertificate.jpg” is scaled down to the much smaller page size of the JPEG “Obama_Birth.jpg” then the image pixel resolution is increased from 72 PPI x 72 PPI to 300 PPI x 300 PPI..

In the mean time WKV is collecting results from the PDF file “ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” which is an intermediate page size W = 13.49 in. ; H = 16.170 in. The pixel resolution of this intermediate size image is 200 PPI x 200 PPI.

As he always does, NBC is leaving large holes in his storyline. He especially likes to increase his number of degrees of freedom which proves conclusively that he is no scientist.
A visual analog of his research would be a large sink hole into which all facts are tossed. He just will never have enough courage to climb down to the bottom of the hole and pick up the right pieces.

NBC especially avoids (at all costs) nailing down the bonafides and chain of custody of the initial images upon which all of his purported work depends. Evidently he sees this as his “way out” in case everything goes South and the authorities suddenly show up at his door.

NBC is a very slippery guy.

I don’t really expect the leopard to change his spots.

No, I am just a diligent researcher my friend… And I continue to show you wrong.

    Not my fault really…

Poor Hermitian does not really comprehend how one goes about scientific hypothesis forming and see my experiments as weaknesses…

    Poor soul

    5. I checked to see if the original file “4db82608b436f.pdf “ could be downloaded from the Muscatine Journal URL via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.

    “”
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    NBC then posted the following:
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    NBC says:

Sigh… This is hilarious… Does our friend not realize that the Muscatine Journal never hosted the PDF?
A little capability to do the correct research clears up so many ‘fantasies’

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Now NBC’s link returns the following message:

    “Element not valid
The element requested is either not valid or does not exist.”

Which is what I had already posted above.

However I subsequently did a broader search and turned up the only available archived information on the relevant URL. I posted my findings here:

Consequently, for the PDF file “4db82608b436f.pdf.pdf “, the available data cannot establish that it existed before Nov. 7, 2011. However we know that the file “4db82608b436f.pdf” was posted on the Muscatine Journal web site on May 27, 2011.

Additionally I discovered the previous existence of another file JPEG “4db82608e187b.preview-300.jpg” which no longer can be found on the internet but did exist as recently as Apr. 4, 2013.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm… Do you suppose that this is NBC’s newly found “AP JPEG” “Obama_Birth.jpg” which he linked to here:

That’s the one which is almost the same page size as the Muscatine Journal’s “4db82608b436f.pdf” but with higher resolution of 300 PPI x 300 PPI instead of 200 PPI x 200 PPI.

    Only NBC would know…

But then he will never tell us where he got his “latest “AP JPEG” image from.

  18. Does anyone else out there besides me wonder what NBC’s and WKV’s “AP JPEG” really is ?

  19. “ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf” which can be found here:

    http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf

which is the same size as the AP Images here:

    http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Obama/400ef843b542462bb458f01b39012402/53/0

Now WKV has posted that he is using the first link above for his analysis of the AP ABC News image.

Both of these two images are page size W = 13.49 in. ; H = 16.17 in. And pixel resolution of 200 PPI x 200 PPI.

Wrong. While both are the same size in terms of pixels (2698×3234), the second one, which is the AP JPEG, has a pixel resolution of 300 PPI x 300 PPI, for a page size of W = 8.993 in., H = 10.78 in.

  20. NBC especially avoids (at all costs) nailing down the bonafides and chain of custody of the initial images upon which all of his purported work depends.

If you want to see some real avoidance of bonafides and chain of custody, check out the reports of Vogt, Papit, and Irey.

But note that in every case, the pixel dimensions are the same as the official AP JPEG, available here. 2698 x 3234 This is a ridiculously trivial difference, requiring nothing more than declaring a different resolution.

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I’m under the understanding that the page dimensions (in inches) of the AP ABC News PDF and the AP JPEG that you purchased from AP Images are the same. Is that the case?

  23. Did Herm’s really miss that the pixel dimensions were the same???

C’mon, Herms, this is trivial math! LOL!

  24. Does anyone else out there besides me wonder what NBC’s and WKV’s “AP JPEG” really is ?

It’s just you. If you doubt it, why do not what any researcher would do? Spend the money to obtain the AP JPEG.

You are such a lazy ‘researcher’…

  25. But then he will never tell us where he got his “latest “AP JPEG” image from.

Fool. I told you were I got my data. You are such a sore loser my friend…

And you are by no standard a scientist… when it comes to these issues.

At least three times we have shown Hermitian to be wrong about large workflows. Not to mention the countless times he could not get the details right.

So much education and yet he still does not comprehend the basic principles.

    He is so useful though…

  26. I had hoped that Hermitian understood that which is involved in establishing a hypothesis. He see me collecting information as trying to increase the degrees of freedom.

    How sad….

Without data, we only have mindless speculation and we have seen where that leads us…

  27. I’m under the understanding that the page dimensions (in inches) of the AP ABC News PDF and the AP JPEG that you purchased from AP Images are the same. Is that the case

Our friend is still struggling with pixels, and how they combine to PPI and size.

After so many months, he is still interested in inches… What a fool

Because I’m not an editor. Therefore, I would have to lie to obtain the image. So why don’t you or your sidekick WKV post a copy of your receipt ? That will come in handy when you have to testify. You know, testifying is all about telling the truth.

“You are such a lazy ‘researcher’…”

Funny ! But you didn’t challenge any of my facts or address any of my questions.

That behavior doesn’t land the rocket on the Moon.

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Oh I’m sure it’s trivial to you WKV but we Engineers have to nail down all the variables. Especially when the other side keeps changing them every 10 minutes.

And it’s even worse when it’s a put and take operation. Just like yesterday when NBC took the AP Images “AP JPEG” off the table and sneaked (snuck) in two new substitutes.

Then there’s the obvious. If it’s just the resolution that matters then why would we need METADATA ?

Most likely the METADATA is also being forged. Free software for altering METADATA is available all over the internet.

That’s why you Obots have nothing until you post all of your files. Or else post your sworn affidavits.
But that would require that you sign your real name. And maybe produce a birth certificate to back it up because you have used aliases in the past.

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    Right Chief !

First you told us you got your “AP JPEG” here:

    http://abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/ap_obama_certificate_dm_110427.pdf

And then you took that back and stated that you got your two “AP JPEGs” here:

    and here:

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
But you totally omitted any facts that relate these two new images to the one that you had claimed that you were using for all your workflow trials.

So how many redos do you get Dude before you put up a workflow that you will thereafter have to defend.

    Just remember Chief …

Anything that your Machine Forger can do my Human Forger can do better !
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

And you are by no standard a scientist… when it comes to these issues.

“At least three times we have shown Hermitian to be wrong about large workflows. Not to mention the countless times he could not get the details right.”

    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
That’s weird because I count them all the way up to zero.

  33. Methinks NBC has punched out my last few posts. Guess I’ll have to start saving them to post elsewhere. I’m usually good for a few weeks over at Mr. C’s before he pulls my ticket.

Evidently, the truth hurts over here.

  34. Engineers are not scientists. They are technicians. To be a scientist one must actually do science.

I think that is an inaccurate generalization. Engineers apply the scientific method and known scientific principles to achieve practical results. I have known PhD scientists that I wouldn’t trust to touch my car. Today many research scientists have to understand engineering principles to be able to construct the apparatuses needed to do research. The Large Hadron Collider is a good example. It is both a scientific and engineering marvel.

What NBC, Kevin Vicklund and the others are doing here is within the capabilities of most engineers and scientists. It is a matter of reading and understanding the different file standards and applying the proper analysis tools in the proper way, with a little math thrown in. I would argue that what they are doing is more in the field of computer engineering arena rather than science. The “science” of JPEG’s, PDF’s, and MRC compression has all been developed. These are mature technologies.

Henry’s problems are classic for someone with extreme confirmation bias. He is so convinced that no original birth certificate existed that he is looking for any anomaly at all and he stops there and usually ends up embarrassed because he didn’t question his conclusions. Actually a real researcher would approach the analysis of the LFBC PDF with exactly the opposite confirmation bias. The surrounding set of facts suggests the overwhelming probability that the every known image is copy of an original piece of paper supplied by Hawaii. Any research that yields contrary results should be checked, double checked, and peer reviewed. The so called Birther experts skipped all those steps. NBC used the “God of the Gaps” term in an article. It is a great analogy for what the CCP is doing. Their technique should be called the “Forger of the Gaps”.

  35. I’m under the understanding that the page dimensions (in inches) of the AP ABC News PDF and the AP JPEG that you purchased from AP Images are the same. Is that the case?

No. See above where I calculated the page size.

Additionally I discovered the previous existence of another file JPEG “4db82608e187b.preview-300.jpg” which no longer can be found on the internet but did exist as recently as Apr. 4, 2013.

I imagine it’s rather similar to this thumbnail embedded on this page of the Muscatine Journal:

    4db821ea46623.preview-300.jpg

  36. Funny ! But you didn’t challenge any of my facts or address any of my questions.

You are projecting again… What you call facts are random tidbits of irrelevant nature. You claimed that you had established that applewhite created the ABC News PDF and the Muscatine PDF.

ROTFL… As to your questions… They have become completely irrelevant.

  37. Guess I’ll have to start saving them to post elsewhere. I’m usually good for a few weeks over at Mr. C’s before he pulls my ticket.

    ROTFL…

  38. Kevin: I imagine it’s rather similar to this thumbnail embedded on this page of the Muscatine Journal:

    4db821ea46623.preview-300.jpg

    ROTFL… Poor Hermitian

  39. Hermitian: But you totally omitted any facts that relate these two new images to the one that you had claimed that you were using for all your workflow trials.

So how many redos do you get Dude before you put up a workflow that you will thereafter have to defend.

You do not understand the concept of experiments now do you? Until I got the recent DCSA103 JPEG, I did not have access so I had to look for resources online. You too could have done the research but you believe that MSNBC data are unreliable… Poor Hermitian… Data is for him to ignore rather than understand. That’s the difference between us my friend, I let data guide me… Understanding is what comes with following the data…

  40. Because I’m not an editor. Therefore, I would have to lie to obtain the image. So why don’t you or your sidekick WKV post a copy of your receipt ? That will come in handy when you have to testify. You know, testifying is all about telling the truth.

ROTFL… Poor Hermitian believes that there will be testimony :-)…. Funny to what extent our poor friend is willing to go to not have to deal with the data and facts…

  41. So why don’t you or your sidekick WKV post a copy of your receipt ?

When will Hermie learn to stop calling me a liar?

No, you called NBC a liar one too many times and he has put you on moderation – this has been the case for several weeks now, did you just notice? Which means every time you comment, he has to approve the comment before it will appear. Also note that any comment with more than one link automatically goes into moderation, regardless of who makes the comment.

That pretty well covers it all. So what is permitted ?

  45. That pretty well covers it all. So what is permitted ?

Except as expressly permitted therein… Can you not read?

  46. “Editorial Use” means the use of an image for editorial, factual, educational, news, informational and/or historical purposes, including in order to depict persons, places or event of public interest.

I had a one-time use license for editorial use on my website. I was limited to 1 day, with a maximum of 100,000 downloads for each. When I took down the factual and educational article less than a day after posting it, each file had 99,997 downloads remaining. As it is now more than 30 days since I purchased the rights, I have destroyed all copies of the files I received from the AP, excepting the one archival copy of my work that is permitted.

As I paid for the right to permit downloads, the six total downloaded copies, wherever they may be, are subject to standard Fair Use copyright law.

  47. Is Herms seriously going to go with …. “I say WKV violated the terms of use (whether you did or not [WKV didn’t]), therefore his findings are invalid” ? 😉

  48. I think he’s trying to intimidate me with vague threats of a lawsuit. Like the AP is going to sue me over some technicality. Even if I did violate some provision, it would cost them more to sue me than they would get back. At most, I get a letter explaining how I violated the terms, telling me not to do it again. However, it was my intent to work within the terms.

  49. Look Hermitian is struggling to maintain his credibility. The best thing he could do is admit to his foolishness.

Sadly I do not believe Hermitian is driven by logic
